Kiln drying process
Kiln drying is a process that uses heat and controlled airflow to remove moisture from wood. The goal is to reduce the wood's moisture content to a desired level without causing it to warp, crack, or split.
Process
Remove the moisture from the wood as vapor and discharge it from the kiln
Place wood in a kiln
Control the temperature, humidity, and airflow
Increase the temperature as the wood's moisture content decreases
Kilns
Conventional kilns: Use steam to heat the kiln and radiate heat into the atmosphere
Dehumidification kilns: Use a dehumidifier to reduce the humidity in the kiln
Vacuum kilns: Used for special applications
Solar kilns: Used for special applications
Tips
Increasing the temperature too quickly can damage the wood
To prevent checks and cracks, paint or wax the ends of boards
After drying, let the wood cool down slowly
Benefits
Kiln drying is faster than air drying
Kiln drying produces wood that is more uniform and consistent
